Women With Wings

The run began on July 2, 2007 from Ameilia Earhart Birthplace Museum in Atchison, Kansas. Essie was
impressed with the lovely gardens, over looking the Missouri River. Numerous people came to wish Essie well and the trip west began.

On the drive to Atchison, a few of the simulator windows blew in but it is ready to go. Essie attached a harness to the front of the simulator so she can pull it along. At the museum, the curator climbed into the simulator for a quick photo.

Essie is up at 2 am and ends between 6-7 pm daily. Her support car checks on her hourly and maintains visual contact during the day. A minimum of five to seven people will provide support for Essie over the next 22 days of the run. She will camp out during this trip.

Early in the trip, Essie pulled the fight simulator. With in a few days, the simulator’s wheels bent so it will be towed until the end. There is no time to make repairs. It was a disappointment but Essie
remained focused on forging ahead. Even on the trailer, the simulator draws interest and questions.

Saturday July 7, 2007

Essie traveled from Washington to Belleville It was a very hot and cloudless day in the high 90’s. As a special treat, we ate at the Two Doors Down cafĂ© in Cuba, Kansas. The local folks were so friendly and shared stories about Cuba’s history. This town has been featured in Charles Kuwalt Sunday Morning and in National Geographic featuring the
survival of small towns in the America.

We slept in a small park next to the highway. As we prepared for bed, a hugh combine harvester, passed by preparing to cut a near-by wheat field. For the next half hour, we stood in awe of this giant noisy, dusty machine that delayed all thoughts of sleep.

Sunday July 8, 2008
Essie was up at 2 am and on the road by 2:45 am. It was a breezy and beautiful morning. The back-up car was visited by the sheriff with-in five minutes of parking at the road side. Essie made good time as the stars lit up the sky. The day turned out to be a scorcher and the ice melted rapidly. Essie’s is sunburned and her face is peeling.
.
Her ankle began swelling and was sore because she twisted it a few days earlier. Our search for an ace bandage was fruitless since the drug store is not open on Sunday. We purchased white coaches tape at the grocery store to provide support for her ankle. It was another hot day close to 100 degrees. Essie continued walking until 7 pm. We slept in Mankato City Park and we were entertained by the cicadas and eaten by the mosquitoes.

Monday July 9, 2008
It was a dark morning at 2am. Clouds filled the sky and the only light came from the distant lightening storm. It was windy and cool. The rain started at 7am. The shoulder
narrowed between Mankato and Smith Center and it would be challenging to find a place to pull out. Essie’s ankle continues to be sore and it is difficult to ice it down since she is camping out.

Thursday July 11, 2007
Essie is now walking on crutches to relieve the pressure on her ankle. The weather cooled down and they had a big storm a few days ago. She has now completed half her walk and is in good spirits.
